For most women, traveling alone to a foreign country can be daunting, especially in a country in the middle east. The first thought that generally arises is ‘Is it safe?’
Well, I’m here to tell you from experience that Jordan is probably the safest country in the middle east – way safer than Egypt for example.
Whether you are traveling alone or with other people, here are three reasons why it’s safe to travel in Jordan as a woman.
1. Jordan is the most progressive country in the Middle East
When most people think of the middle east, they automatically think it’s dangerous. This can be the case in some countries but Jordan is an exception.
Although it’s bordered by Syria and Iraq, which are known to have political unrest and war, it’s still a rather safe country. Just make sure to stay away from the borders of those neighboring countries.
Jordan is far more progressive than other countries in the middle east which makes it a great reason to feel safe. For example, although many Muslim women still cover their faces and/or heads with hijabs, this is by choice and not mandatory.
You will actually see local women dressing much more casually and fashionably here than in other countries. For example, many women wear skinny jeans and sneakers.
Tip: Even though Jordan is more progressive, be sure to respect the culture and dress modestly. Loose-fitting clothes as well as covering your arms and legs when possible is a good way to make sure you don’t draw any unwanted attention.
Of course in popular destinations such as Petra or The Dead Sea, you can get away with wearing shorts or bathing suits.

2. Jordanians Are particularly respectful toward women
I felt very safe and respected in Jordan, even by the men. I had just come from Egypt and the difference is astounding honestly. Jordanian men were actually helpful, friendly, and talked to me in a normal, kind manner.
Whereas in Egypt, the men looked at me in a creepy way and one man even asked me if I would kiss him. You can just feel the difference in how they treat and view women.
Jordanian women also have more freedom here than in neighboring countries. They are allowed to drive, travel freely without a man, and are generally quite educated. Because of this, men respect them which is a mindset mirrored in how they view women tourists as well.
Tip: Although Jordan is safer than other countries, traveling still has its risks and you should never let your guard down. Don’t walk around unpopulated or sketchy areas, be mindful of your belongings, and if you have a bad gut feeling – listen to it!
3. Jordan has become a popular tourist destination
Ever since Petra became a Wonder of the World, tourism has increased heavily in Jordan. This is a plus for solo female travelers because the top destinations are going to be filled with other tourists making it a safe place.
The main attractions like Petra, The Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum are so incredible, they attract other travelers as well. So chances are you’ll meet other people or women doing the same thing you are. Or at the very least, be surrounded by other travelers who don’t pose a threat to you.
Furthermore, visiting popular areas means that the locals you will encounter are quite used to tourists. You’ll feel safer around people that are used to meeting new people as opposed to locals from smaller villages who don’t normally meet foreigners.
Tip: Beware of a common scam by local Bedouins who are known to look like pirates – think Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. They’ll often have long, thick hair and dark eyeliner on. They are known as romance scammers.
They prey on innocent, solo women and will often try to get money from you by pretending they’re in love with you. Just be aware of any men giving you too much unwanted and unnatural attention.
So is Jordan safe to travel to as a woman?
Yes! You should not worry about being in any danger or being treated any differently because you are a woman. Of course, there are always risks when traveling to a foreign country but there are no more risks in Jordan than there would be in any other country you’d visit without hesitation.
Not only is it a safe place but the locals are friendly and generally very keen on talking to you and offering help if you need it. Overall, you shouldn’t hesitate on visiting Jordan because of safety concerns. It’s a beautiful country with its own unique culture that’s waiting for you to explore it!
I hope that this post silenced your concerns about the safety of traveling to Jordan as a woman. Petra is one of the most mesmerizing places I’ve ever visited and you definitely don’t want to miss out! As long as you’re cautious, mindful, and smart, you should be safe while traveling in Jordan.
